Now that I have a bike with a battery I would like to hard wire my Magellan Merdian GPS so I don't need to run it off AA batteries. What are my options for this?

I've seen that quite a few people use a cigerette lighter outlet mounted near the gps. Where are the cigerette lighter outlets available from? I guess that these just hook up to the battery with a fuse on the positive side.

I already have the cigerette lighter adapter for the GPS. Can I remove the plug and wire this cable directly to the battery with a fuse?

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Brian, I use a cigarette lighter mounted to my cross bar, but the plug won't stay plugged in with vibration. I use piece of duct tape wrapped around to keep it secure. Crappy tire has the weather proof sockets.

Hard wiring it to the bike would probably be better, or use a 2 prong automotive connector. I'll probably change mine to this. Just make sure your GPS is capable of handling 12v input, or use the voltage reducer built into the 12v adaptor.

I first tried mine switched with the ignition, but everytime the bike was shut off, the GPS would shut down and was not ideal. Now it's wired directly to the battery with a fuse on the positive side.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll probably try wiring in the cigerette lighter power cable and adding a plug near the bars.
