I have 8 days this summer in August I have taken off work so I can go on my first bike trip. My experience level of riding an adventure bike (KLR650) is minimal, but I have owned street bikes and raced Motorcross bikes as a teenager. However, at 51 my teen years are a very distant memory. I want to do some camping, stay in some sketchy motels and have a decent amount of fun off-road. I was considering Lake Placid, but I was told there may be an issue in that area riding off-road. I have received conflicting information about off-road riding in that area, but I am not committed to that trip. I don't want to travel more than 400-500km a day and I am fine with the US or Canada. Some suggestions would be great.

Go to Bancroft! Avoid the U.S. Get the offroad maps here and you'll be fully occupied for some of those days. Head up around Mattawa on the same trip and you can ride the VMUT trails. This way, you may even find a riding buddy, which is always a good thing.

I agree with Bruce. If this is your first dual sport/adventure riding trip stick around Ontario. There are lots of great areas to explore. 8 days you can do a pretty decent trip. Head toward calabogie/Bancroft,then up and around Algonquin, over to North Bay area, Sudbury and down to Manitoulin island. Depending on how much trail vs. gravel road you want to do that should be ok. If you feel like it's to much head south from North Bay through Muskoka area.

From what I understand, the only offroad riding available in NY state is on private land.

Thanks, Bruce. I knew I would get some solid advice here. I took a look at Bancroft which I have been to many times by car and I looked at the site for VMUT which I have never heard of. It seems incredible. I have a long time to plan this out, so I am sure this forum will be a great resource. Thanks !
