My 10 year old daughter got stopped riding at 20 km/h on the shoulder of a gravel road with no houses or businesses on it. Riding a little 110, with full riding gear on, elbows, knees, boots, even chest/back protector, licensed, and with a trail permit. But got reamed out for no insurance on her bike. Since my history is pretty clean and I'm a fine upstanding citizen, he only wrote us up for a non-moving violation or something, I forget what exactly. It was like $200, no points. But the charge could have been serious. I tried arguing with the cop, I told him I can't buy insurance for them. He seemed like he was kinda sympathetic, but said that it was possible to buy insurance. He knows, because other people have it. After he left, I asked the people near me in the parking lot. All of them were riding dirty and just kept their mouths shut while this was going on. As I dealt with this frustration... I had thoughts about printing pink slips... but decided it wasn't worth the potential legal trouble. The whole situation is bullshit. IMO, it's a sexist policy. Seriously. Somebody should file a human rights complain. It denies women the right to enjoy the sport on an appropriately sized machine. Nobody makes a machine that is sized for a shorter than average woman that is over 150cc.
NOTE TO ALL: TD Insurance is the only solution I'm aware of. I was able to get a policy on my family fleet of motorcycles. The only issue... it's on-road insurance. TD does not do off-road only insurance. So I have street insurance on a CRF125F. Crazy but true. And then you get OPFC 32, which permits unlicensed drivers to operate it off highway. It costs like $250/machine. And I can only do this because I have my M license. If you don't have that, then no dice. Well, crazy, I think they will actually insure you even if you don't have a license, but it will cost even more. The whole thing is ridiculous. But it's the only option at this point. https://www.fsco.gov.on.ca/en/auto/autobulletins/archives/Documents/a-04_90-37.pdf
When we're able to set this up? i had the same deal with TD but they refused my son's bikes and I had to find an alternative several years ago. Have things changed? Are you grandfathered in?
I first got this policy about 2 years ago, but I made a change, got rid of one bike and added a new small bike just a couple months ago.
All your phone calls should be directed to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) they have some answers. I made the call last week, left a message and got a return call in about 30 minutes, with a satisfactory solution. Google the above for all pertinent info. Warren Thaxter.......
Warren, can you share your solution? Just wondering what that means. If the answer is "Cooperators", then it's not a solution for me. I investigated that, and the other company that will only insure bikes if they also get the rest of your business, and those aren't solutions for me. Their pricing on everything else was way too high.
I called the IBC. The fellow that called me back was a nice enough guy but all he offered me was street facility insurance as an option which was ridiculously priced. I lost my cool with him and had to apologize. All I want to do is be legal with a reasonable payment. I’ve already switched my entire fleet once to an insurance company to get the kids bikes insured who is now refusing to insure our new to use ttr125s. I will do it again if someone can point me to a company that is competitive. I have a house a travel trailer, a boat, two sleds, three cars and four bikes to insure.
About 10-15 years ago I got Green plate insurance from State Farm from Nicole McCann as a “Single Vehicle Offroad Policy”. I was roughly 20-years old, with no level of M-license, trying to get green plate insurance on my KX125. Think I paid like $140 for the year for liability only. Give her a call, maybe she can help. https://nicolemccann.ca/?utm_id=ls-e-0-24931&campagne=ls-e-0-24931
I doubt it. I was with State Farm before TD. They wouldn't insure small bikes either. That's why I switched my bikes and the family bikes to TD. Actually, that whole fiasco started... I had a KTM Freeride with a blue plate, but I was paying only $80/year for off-road insurance. I replaced that with a CRF450L, but when I called to transfer insurance, they said they won't sell me off-road insurance on a street bike. Didn't matter that I only ride if off-road. So I told them to cancel my policy. Several months later, I noticed they were still charging me. I called the office to cancel it again. Many months later, I found out they STILL hadn't cancelled the policy. I'm still paying for the damn thing 2 years later, which obviously is partially my fault but seriously, I've told them 3 times already. There are some people with grandfathered policies at SF. And I've heard that if you have a special relationship with them (maybe own a business) they will still do it. Which is ****. Is this a democracy where we're all treated equally, or do we need to start bribing government officials? It doesn't help out situation at all, that we have this kinda/sorta/maybe/depends who you know/depends who you bribe situation. Because the government and police look at it and say "what's the problem, you can still buy insurance". But the problem is for us muggles, you can't REASONABLY buy insurance. All of this business about bundling of policies... you're either selling a product, or you're not. Can you imagine going to the grocery store and they tell you they won't sell you milk unless you buy bread? The whole thing is discriminatory. If you're a rich business owner, you can get insurance. If you are poor, or a woman, or a young person, small stature, other physical disabilities preventing you from riding a full size bike, etc. you are being denied equal rights to access public land.
Nordique Insurance through Western Financial Group insured bikes below 150cc, the cost is 170$ monthly!!! they are asking 2 months payment upfront. that is just for third party liability. obviously it cost more if you take full protection. I called TD got a quote for CRF 150 and 8o insured for 365$ and 286$ yearly.
I was insured with Nordique Insurance through Western Financial Group who insured my 80cc and 150cc rides for a very very costly monthly premium. I called TD, like some suggested and got a quote for way way way much more cheaper. I am guessing when talking to the TD agent, there is a glitch in their system where dirtbikes are insured has motorcycle, it helps if you own a motorcycle and have a "M" license, so depending on the agent you may or may not get insurance. Could it get complicated if a claim need to go through, I don't know. I just want ot ride with my family!
TD / Security National continues to insure my CBR125R ('super sport' not off road) for $291 annually and Desjardins / Certas my XL350R for $82 (trail bike) so it looks like i wont do any better shopping around!
