I have a trip planned for this summer. I was wondering if anyone has some GPS routes where I might be going. I'm starting in Cambridge and going to Tobermory where I will catch the ferry across. I have driven up this way many times but would like to take gravel roads and what off road I can find. Has anyone done a ride up this way?
try looking here. http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43 You may want to ask Dual Sport. I can PM contact information if you need.

HI Jim. I did a similar route three years ago. KW to Tobermory, Ferry across, then found my way to Timmins, then back down through Sudbury and down. I had no GPS, just knowledge of some excellent gravel from when I worked up there. It is relatively remote, and being that I was solo, I didn't get too far off known routes. But, you could explore for 100's of kms up there. MOstly logging roads. I took two cans of spagetti O's and a tent. Was fun.
We had a KLR ride that way a while back. Met in Arthur and then worked our way up to Tobermory and caught the ferry to Manitoulin. Rode around the isalnd for a few hours and then headed to Sudbury for 3 nights in a motel (and to dump the saddlebags, etc). Did 2 days of "wilderness riding" north of Sudbury - similar to the Rally Connex Nickel Belt (?) Ride, and then made our way home via Dokis and Nipissing, then south on the Nipissing Pioneer Trail to Muskoka. Ride pictures are here. I've probably still got the tracklog if you want to see where we went. BTW, I wouldn't do the same ride again - wasn't that good apart from the stuff north of Sudbury. Bob
ONe other thing, make sure you know the ferry schedule and prebook your crossing if you can. I didn't, and missed the early ferry, by just a couple vehicles. No more room. Then had to wait some four or six hours for the last one, and that really cut into my Manitoulin exploration riding.
Yep- prebook as early as you can, as it can get booked up weeks in advance sometimes. Lots of gravel and little 'tar & chip' back roads to choose from zig-zagging from KW all the way up to about Dyers Bay or so. Could easily make a 3.5 hr trip by car(via main highway) into a 6-8 hr adventure/DS ride on a bike.
That's my idea. I'm leaving early on a Wednesday and riding up to the Sauble Beach area where my parents have a cottage. Eat some of their food then head off again towards the ferry. Catch the last ferry of the day and camp on the island before setting off the next day.
Camp on Island? I think you better look into that quite a bit more. It's a beauty Island, but is certainly native land....
There are quite a few organized campgounds on Manitoulin. Finding accommodations shouldn't be too much trouble.
That would not be a good idea. There is little, if not any, crown land on Manitoulin. It's all private and native owned.
Did a very similar trip a few years ago... here's the ride report: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233433
Brian, if you have one that would be great. I'm looking for different areas to check out along the way.
Check out my site. I have tracklogs downloadable in the gps section or contact me for info. I am always willing to help out. Several members here are members of GPSAT. I live in Timmins and have been a DS rider my entire life. -- A Lifetime of Adventure James Browne Website Administrator: GPS Adventure Touring Home: http://sites.google.com/site/gpsadventuretouring/ Forum: http://gpsadventuretouring.proboards.com/
