Looking for thoughts on choosing between the Zumo XT and the Montana 700. Plans are for a unit that will do well both off-road and on-road across multiple bikes. Starting with “casual” trail riding on a CRF300L but also moving to something like a Rally Connex event (Dacre is on my sooner than later bucket list). I want to be able to share it to a larger adventure bike for a more adventure touring, road oriented riding style. Also willing to look at the Zumo XT2, though reviews seem to be that most are saying the XT2 isn’t a worthy successor to the XT
Hey Chris, Here is a thread from Adventure Rider that you may find helpful that discusses those two units. https://advrider.com/f/threads/garmin-zumo-xt-better-then-montana-for-off-road-use.1448160/ This is a great forum, with a dedicated thread for the CRF300L/Rally that's almost 900 pages! I have no experience with the Montana 700 but I do have the Zumo XT on my CRF300L I have the Backroads Maps sd card and it works great with that, not to mention the supplied City Navigator 2025. Also, Zumo XT mount is solid. Since the CRF300L has it own auxillary switched plug behind the headlight (let me know if you don't know what I'm talking about) I just wired in a double USB plug on the handlebar and then us a USB cord to power the Zumo (or anything else like phone, camera etc) rather than the supplied power plug in the mount....does that make sense?
Hey Tony, thanks for the link, I'll check out that comparison thread. Thanks also for sharing your insight on the Zumo XT. I did find the info on the switched aux plug and am planning to do a similar setup depending on which GPS I pick up.
Oh and one other thing. I got my Zumo last year from Amazon. It was a "refurbished" unit and saved me an extra $100. It works great....so far so good.
