Hi there. My son is looking to buy a new motorcycle. With an advertised price of $5450, what is a reasonable offer to make? I have no idea what type of profit margins these dealerships work with, and I want to be realistic. He wants a KLX250 with FI, so if anyone knows of a 2018 or newer used one for sale, please let me know! Thanks for any help on this.
Most of the dealers I have come across say their profit margins are quite think 300-500$ They make money off the customer returning for parts and gear Have said that, I would offer $5K (buyer's market right now)
The dealer I just purchased from waived the freight and pdi charge as an incentive. This is usually around $4-500 on top of the price. I don't think there is more than $500 profit in the msrp on bikes.
I usually just ask the dealer for their best price. I think they are generally fair and they don't have a lot of room to move. Anyone else notice how few used bikes there are on the market right now? And the crazy asking prices? We are looking for a bike for my nephew and it is looking like my brother will need to ante up for a brand new one.
I sure noticed, that's why I ended up going new. The bikes don't seem very expensive at first, it's the accessories you buy after the fact that start to really add up. Buying used with all the extras I was going to buy anyway would have been my preference but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot available that I could see as a reasonable deal.
I normally buy used as well, but the used prices are way up there right now. Even bikes listed as needing work are sporting high prices.
I've also noticed that the market is just devoid of cheap bikes. Trying to find a sub $2000 dirt bike this year is a hard ask, especially with ownership. That being said, I talked to Factory Rec in Midland, and they are selling bikes/quads and seadoos like hot cakes. I guess everyone wanting to get out and enjoy the weather without being in large crowds. Unfortunately I think this will mean more boat accidents, and more trespass issues. Lots of people coming north, buying a quad, and riding around without a care about where they are riding, or having a trail pass. On the topic though, I agree with everyone else. See if they can bring it down a couple hundred bucks. Those KLX250's are nice bikes and worth the cheap price for brand new.
Yeah, there is isn't much price difference between a good condition used and brand new, especially when looking at the fuel injected models. I am thinking I might jump in with my son and try a deal on two units. I know they aren't the fastest bikes, but I am less about aggressive riding and more about putting around and simply enjoying the ride. I hear what you are saying about used dirt bikes. I have been looking as well, and not a lot of deals out there. I am sure some will come up, but they are few and far between. Thanks for the info.
My 2010 klx was $6299 I'm not sure how much they've changed but $5450 for a bike 10 years newer seems like a good deal I must say I sure loved that bike, it did 95% of what I asked it to do and it was very reliable the whole time I had it.
That is a similar out the door price for this bike. The $5450 is the price before taxes. No matter, it is interesting that the price point hasn't changed that much over 10 years. The only real difference is the fuel injection. Not sure if that costs more or less to produce as compared to a carb-based bike.
Reading this, my curiosity was piqued. I bought one of those new in 08 and thought the MSRP was pretty similar so I looked up the old thread.
I was able to get them down to an OTD price of $6150 (with some extras). Not too bad. Buying left over models seems to be the way to go. With my luck, I will find a screaming used deal tomorrow. Maybe it is best if I don't look! Thanks for all the suggestions in this thread. It is much appreciated. By the way, my son has decided to go a different route, so this bike is mine (I am so weak!!) It will be interesting to see the differences between this bike and the 2007 KLX 250 I had before. See you out on the trails!
I went to a Honda dealer in Ottawa last weekend to look for some gear. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. They had about 10-20 off-road trail bikes, the air cooled models. They all had sold stickers on them. All of them. They had nothing left. Dealer said he's never seen anything like it. Street bikes and motorcross bikes not so much. But all the air cooled models, all gone.
Same is going on with ATVs. I was looking & thinking there might be some good deals out there if sales are slow, but the inventory is almost all gone. No deals to be had...One dealer told me outboard motors are also selling like hot cakes.
